There are a lot of buzzwords that we associate with "clean" beauty: all-natural, organic, non-toxic. But all you really need to look at to find clean beauty products is the ingredients list. If a product is free of things like parabens, sulfates, silica and anything artificial, it's a good bet that it's going to be cleaner for your face and body.
The beauty industry is self-regulated, meaning they can slap basically any kind of label on their products -- usually including those pesky buzzwords -- to entice you to buy them. So, it's up to you to do the due diligence of ingredient research to find the cleanest products possible, if it's something you consider important.
Most of the chemicals and artificial substances used in hair, makeup and skin care products are there because they're meant to accomplish things like extending a product's shelf life or make fragrances last longer -- inventory that keeps longer helps out production and sales. But the problem is that more often than not, these substances are harmful to your body (in easily missed ways) and the environment. The idea of clean beauty products is to make what you're putting on your body and into the atmosphere just altogether better.
