To the surprise of no one, "Game of Thrones" has broken the record for most Emmy nominations by a drama series, scooping up no less than 32 nods. Lots of those are actor nominations, but the majority goes to effects, costumes and the like.
Though, it might be a surprise to some disgruntled fans.
Here’s the thing about the last season of “Game of Thrones” -- people weren’t happy with it. Reddit users recently even went so far as to rig Google so that when you search “bad writers,” photos of showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff pop up...ouch. Coincidentally, the show only earned one nomination for its writing. The backlash was such that there were even petitions for the cast and crew to re-do the entire last, over-$90 million season -- and the cast was, rightfully, offended. Just this week, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister), who was nominated himself for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, was interviewed at Con of Thrones in Nashville defending the show and all the work that went into it.
“For anyone to imagine or to think that the two creators of this show are not the most passionate, the greatest, the most invested of all, and to for a second think that they didn’t spend the last 10 years thinking about how they were gonna end it, is kinda silly,” he told Deadline. “We worked our asses off to make the best show we could for the ending.”
And when the nominations came in, he told The Hollywood Reporter, “The only thing I can say is you don't get this many actors nominated with bad writing. It just does not happen. This validates the writing on 'Game of Thrones,' for sure.”
Regardless of your thoughts on how the story ended up, these bitter fans are missing the bigger picture: that “Game of Thrones” was on a scale on its own. The sets were unbelievable, the characters were raw and enigmatic and the magic was always there. So, yes, they do deserve every single nomination they were handed.
To prove my point, here are six beautifully-executed scenes from season 8 that could win an Emmy on their own.
