If you look up the word “overachiever” in the dictionary, there’s a picture of Reese Witherspoon next to it. Think about it: It’s the type of character she plays in every role, she does a little bit of pretty much everything and she does it perfectly.
Our blonde New Orleans beauty embodies basically everything those with creative muscles want to become. Her acting is relatable, her drive is admirable and don’t even get me started on her charisma. She gave us Elle Woods, you know? Witherspoon didn’t get to where she is (multimedia mogul, bestselling author, overall beautiful soul) by accident, though -- woman’s been hustling since ‘91.
We don’t even have to talk about the wild success of her HBO miniseries, “Big Little Lies,” which just returned for season 2 -- that speaks for itself. Between all her accolades (*ahem*, including an Oscar, an Emmy and two Golden Globes), philanthropy and success with Draper James and “Whiskey In a Teacup,” Witherspoon founded a production company with Seth Rodsky, Hello Sunshine, in 2016 (Pacific Standard, which she opened with Bruna Papandrea in 2012, is now a subsidiary). From there, Reese’s Book Club was born.
Considering its status with a million Instagram followers, Reese’s Book Club via Hello Sunshine is probably second only in popularity to Oprah’s Book Club. Witherspoon’s niche, though, is very hot right now: the female dynamic. Every book (one per month since July 2017), employs a female heroine that Witherspoon’s demographic can relate to, admire or celebrate. Books like “One Day in December” and “Next Year in Havana” include likable protagonists and engaging storylines; she just really knows how to pick ‘em.
So much so that she’s been using her position as boss b*tch to turn her favorite book club picks into so much more. It feels like Witherspoon is basically running down her own book club’s list and picking her favorite stories to adapt into television shows and movies. She’s even putting herself in the starring roles in some of them! And we love and encourage it! I don’t doubt that they’ll all be must-watches -- remember when she produced “Gone Girl”? That was a smash and a half.
