I recently learned that the city of Boston has 11 sister cities. Eleven! And suddenly my travel list is even longer than before. But I hadn't realized that "sister cities" were such an institutionalized thing. While the practice has a storied history, an official program was implemented in the U.S. by President Eisenhower in 1956 to promote international goodwill. The idea is that sister cities work with each other to exchange cultures and ideas. Do you know anything about your own sister city?
