1. "The French Chef"
Dan Akroyd, one crazy Julia Childs impression and gallons
of fake blood. Traumatizing, and still one of the funniest things we’ve seen.
2. "Celebrity Jeopardy!: French Stewart, Burt Reynolds, & Sean Connery"
Will Ferrell and Darrell Hammond’s impressions of Alex
Trebek and Sean Connery became so iconic it was hard to separate caricature
from reality. Norm MacDonald as Burt Reynolds was the extra spice in this hot
chili of madness.
3. "It’s a Wonderful Life Alternate Ending"
This Dana Carvey, Jan Hooks, Phil Hartman and Jon Lovitz
sketch about George Bailey getting revenge on Mr. Potter in the form of a
thorough beatdown is wrong, but so funny if you’ve watched this movie every
year hoping the villain finally gets his just desserts.
4. "Matt Foley: Van Down by the River"
One of Chris Farley’s greatest gifts was his penchant for
physical comedy, especially that which used his whole body. Here, he throws his
whole self into a sketch about a not-so-motivating motivation speaker with an
unforgettable cautionary tale about success and living situations.
5. "NPR’s Delicious Dish: Schweddy Balls"
Is it even Christmas without this dry-as-a-biscotti take
on an NPR show? Alec Baldwin’s Peter takes double meaning to the extreme when
describing his baked goods.
6. "More Cowbell"
We can’t hear classic songs with cowbells in them without
seeing the image of Will Ferrell banging away with his drumstick.
7. "CBS Evening News: Katie Couric Interviews Sarah Palin"
Tina Fey’s impression of Sarah Palin was so iconic that people
thought the real Palin said she could see Russia from her house.
8. "Haunted Elevator (ft. David S. Pumpkins)"
A crappy Party City suit, a Halloween-themed amusement park
ride and Tom Hanks come together for this ridiculously bizarre classic that
has since gained a cult following amongst “SNL” fans and Halloween enthusiasts
alike.
9. "Beavis and Butthead"
From last season, this sketch broke host Ryan Gosling and Mikey
Day, as well as Heidi Gardner, who couldn’t look at them without cracking up.
The two are dressed identically to Beavis and Butthead and fan reaction was so
strong, they dressed up again on the red carpet for Gosling’s “The Fall Guy”
premiere.
10. "The Californians: Stuart Has Cancer"
Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader and Fred Armisen spend most of their
time as soapy Californians arguing over the best route to take while
driving and we’ve never seen a more realistic depiction of living in
California. Cue the dramatic music!
11. "Star Wars Undercover Boss: Starkiller Base"
Adam Driver always has great sketches when he hosts, but
this one, where he plays his own character, Kylo Ren, as if he’s on “Undercover
Boss,” is a standout. Even Sith lords can't get respect.
12. "Diner Lobster"
When John Mulaney, a former “SNL” writer, hosts, you know you’re
in for a treat — and this sketch about ordering questionable dishes in New York
City diners is one of the best. A simple song becomes an ode to Broadway, right down
to a crustacean-lead “Les Misérables.” Another honorable mention by Mulaney is “Airport Sushi.”
13. "HBO Mario Kart Trailer"
What if Nintendo’s Mario starred in his own gritty HBO show,
like “The Last of Us”? Pedro Pascal paints the picture and then some with this
dark look at a treasured racing game.
14. "Mister Robinson's Neighborhood: Nutrition"
Eddie Murphy had lots of great characters in his “SNL”
tenure, like Gumby or Velvet Jones, but when he take a gentle children’s TV character
and makes him a little more streetwise, magic happens.
15. "Papyrus"
The font of the “Avatar” title really tweaks Ryan Gosling’s character,
but now it bothers us too, and we can’t unsee it.
16. "I’m Just Pete"
The production value on this “Barbie” parody is so top-notch
it looks like the actual movie set. Pete Davidson is at his best when he’s
self-deprecating and he goes for it here.
17. "Lazy Sunday"
Most of Lonely Island’s digital shorts are great, but this
one, when Andy Samberg and Chris Parnell plan their laid back weekend over a rap
song, is just perfect.
18. "Close Encounter"
Kate McKinnon and Ryan Gosling have so many great sketches separately,
but this one, where Kate plays a woman who gets treated differently from her
peers during an alien abduction, is perfect teamwork.
19. "Wayne’s World: At the Movies"
Mike Meyers and Dana Carvey sparkled together as Wayne and
Garth, hosts of a cable-access show and this sketch makes us wish there were
more “Wayne’s World” movie sequels.
20. "Pool Boy"
An underrated Pete Davidson character is Chad, a clueless bro
who just OKs everybody. You won't want to miss this Julia Louis-Dreyfus sketch where she plays a
lovestruck housewife to his pool boy — it's laugh-inducing.
