Is it just me, or is there a new juice bar opening up on a corner every few weeks? Maybe it’s just a city thing, but Los Angelans aren’t the only ones obsessed with green juices these days. Not that the trend is confined to green juice though -- there are tons of new cold-pressed juice concoctions hitting markets every day. They’re so mainstream that even drug stores like Walgreens are selling their own partnered brands at their locations.
And then there’s the juice cleanse thing, which really depends on the person and their health and fitness goals (in other words, don’t just do it because it’s “trendy”).
What makes a cold-pressed juice “healthier” is how it’s prepared. When you buy a bottle of juice from the store, it’s probably been pasteurized, meaning heat and chemicals have been added to the produce in the juice. While this stops harmful bacteria from growing while the juice is stored, it also gets rid of any good bacteria. For cold-pressed juices, the pasteurization process is skipped: Fruits and vegetables are crushed with a hydraulic press and put under an immense amount of pressure to deactivate any yucky pathogens. You’re left with the rawest form of juice available, without any sugars or preservatives added.
Drinking a cold-pressed juice is an attractive option to a lot of people simply because of its ease; it’s basically the quickest way to add more fruits and veggies to your diet. What you need to be on the lookout for when choosing juices, though, is that they’re 100 percent organic and have a best-by date (cold-pressed juice shouldn’t be hanging out for more than 72 hours). Also, make sure you’re aware that they’re not necessarily a diet thing -- you’re not really cutting calories by skipping a meal for a bottle of green juice.
With so many options out there though (and considering how pricey these bottles are), it’s worth it to understand what kinds of juices are benefitting your body, and in what ways. Generally, most juices will help you with clearing your skin, focusing your mind and increasing your energy throughout the day, but you came here for specifics.
Each type of juice works toward different health benefits, so grab a cold-pressed juice off the shelf that targets what you’re looking to focus on for any given day.
