What do you picture when you hear "hot cocoa bomb"? I was, admittedly, a little confused at first, but then I started seeing videos on social media, and it alllll made sense.
A fist-sized ball of chocolate is lowered into a steaming cup of milk (or water...but in that case, we're judging), and as the ball melts, it releases your cocoa, and a slew of mini marshmallows erupts from its insides as a special surprise.
The best part? They're totally customizable. Now, the process of creating these chocolate bombs takes a bit of precision and some patience, but oh, the rewards you will reap...
Supplies:
- A spherical silicone mold, around 2 inches or more in diameter
- Baking sheet (I'd also recommend using a silicone mat for easy transfer)
- A plate or bowl, warmed in the microwave or under boiling water
- Food coloring, if you so choose
Ingredients:
- Chocolate melting wafers (milk, white, dark -- your choice!); baking chocolate or chips could work in a pinch
- Mini marshmallows...lots of them
- Extras (sprinkles, crushed peppermint, cinnamon, peanut butter, etc.)
- Warm to hot milk
- Hot cocoa mix, of course!
Create:
- Melt chocolate.
- Fill each half-sphere mold with a heaping tablespoon of melted chocolate and smooth it around the edges of the mold with the back of a spoon.
- Transfer mold to baking sheet and place in freezer for 7 to 10 minutes, or until chocolate is frozen.
- Turn mold over and gentle press on each sphere to pop chocolate out onto baking sheet.
- Fill half of the spheres with a tablespoon of hot cocoa mix, as many marshmallows as you like and whatever extras you're working with.
- Place a filled sphere on the warmed plate or bowl until the bottoms melt just enough to stand upright. Line the edges with more melted chocolate, and place an empty sphere on top. Hold for a moment until the two pieces fuse together.
- Decorate! Use food coloring with melted white chocolate and drizzle over top, or add extras.
- Pop in the freezer for another five minutes to fully set. Store at room temperature.
Serve:
- Place hot cocoa bomb in the bottom of a ceramic or glass mug.
- Pour a cup of hot milk over the bomb, allowing it to melt.
- Stir and enjoy!
